Aussie Pub Dictionary - Pub Talk

Before you order you should know what you are asking for. Here are some of the more common terms you might need to use in an Aussie Pub.

Ale

A beer made by the top fermentation process. The traditional Australian beer.

Beer

A fermented liquor brewed from malt or malt andmalt substitutes. Generally beer in Australia includes ale, lager, pilsner, bitter, draught, stout and maybe a few others.

Bitter

A bitter beer usually well hopped

Bundy

Bunderberg Rum

Draught

A beer served directly from a keg

Keg

A stainless steel barrel of beer

Light Beer

A beer you can drink more of without going over the limit

The Limit

Varies but .05 should keep you safe if you have your full licence. But we don't think it is cool to drink any alcohol and drive

Pilsner

Named after a Czech town or so we are told. It's a light colour beer

Portagaff

Stout and Lemonade , not bad ( A Specialty served at the Mentone Hotel, Cheers to Anna Leamon )

Stout

A dark beer, made with a highly roasted malt. It varies a little bit between states.

Cider

Spirits are pretty much the same all over:

  • Highball 225ml-280ml
  • Collins 225ml-270ml

  • 8oz Beer 225ml
  • 10oz Beer 285ml If you are a young guy you would get a 10oz for a beer

  • Jug 1140ml

Western Australia - Beer

  • Pony 140ml
  • A Beer 200ml

  • Another one(to squeeze one more in)

Arvo

  • Afternoon, after work or after lunch

Aussie

  • An Australian person

Blotto

  • way to much to drink.

Blue-

  • a fight in the local

Blue collar

  • workers & drinkers

B&S

  • A batchelor and Spinsters Ball. Or one big party with big drinkers and heaps of utes. A GREAT NIGHT OUT

Camp

  • Sleep over after a big one out or a quick nap before you go again

Chocka

  • Packed out, heaps of people

Chocka

  • Block-In the middle of a good time

Coldie

  • A Ice Cold Beer

Dance

  • Something you do when your blotto or trying to pick up

Early Opener

  • First stop of the day. Usually shift workers favourite

Gaming

  • In pub betting. Usually Poker Machines or Card Machines

Grog

  • Alcohol

Happy Hour

  • Usually Friday Nights, cheaper drinks

Heart Starter

  • Quick one. Or the first of the day

Perve

  • Love a good look at the talent

Pissed

  • See blotto

Punt

  • Having a bet on the Horses or Dogs

Recovery

  • Usually after the B&S when everyone gets together to talk about their hangovers and and get on the grog, with sausages

Shandy

  • Beer and lemonade

Scull

  • Drink a drink as fast as you can in one go

Shotgun

  • A Darwin thing. A can of beer opened at the top and punctured at the bottom at the same time and then sqeezed and sucked dry from the bottom hole. Just the thing to do in Darwin.

Shitfight

  • Trying to get through the crowd to the bar

Slab

  • A carton of beer. Or box of 24 stubbies or cans

Smoko

  • Take a break for a smoke

Stubbie

  • A small stubby bottle of beer

TAB

  • Totalisator Agency Board. Somewhere to bet

Tat

  • Tattoo

Watering Hole

  • The local pub
